Selfie
This is me 3 1/2 weeks post op. Down 30 pounds since I started my Lap Band journey. I got into my jeans one size down.
Busy, Busy
Why are the holidays so hectic? I have been meaning to blog for a few days now but getting ready for christmas has been taking up all my time. That and getting ready for my piano recital I am having for my students. We actually were able to get our tree the day after Thanksgiving and got a really great black friday deal on it. We got it from a local hardware store and there was no tax that day so that was great. And all the noble fir trees were only 29 bucks for 7 foot tree! By some miracle I have my whole house already decorated! Now on to wrapping presents and baking. Ugh. Baking. Do I really even want to think about doing some baking and I can't eat any of it!
I've been really good with my eating habits. I had my post op appointment yesterday. According to their scale and with all my clothes on I have lost 18 pounds since surgery a little over 3 weeks ago and a total of 28 pounds since I started my lap band journey. According to my scale, weighing myself with little clothing on and early in the morning before I have eaten anything, I have lost 30 pounds and change. My doctor is very proud of my progress and told me that I should be too. He can tell I am sticking to my diet and working really hard. He cleared me to start eating non pureed foods. I tried a lettuce wrap and took too big of a bite and didn't chew it well enough and the bite didn't go down. It was the worst feeling ever. I felt like I couldn't breathe and the bite was stuck in my throat. A little bit of it came up and I was fine after that. I took my time with the rest of the wrap. I learn 2 things: I really have to chew my food well and eat slowly and I never want to experience that again.

I survived Thanksgiving
Well. I did it. I survived Thanksgiving. I may not have followed my pureed food rule, but I was very careful and made sure everything was chewed very well. I ate mostly turkey breast which is what I am supposed to do - protein first. I literally had a cereal spoonful of mashed potatoes and also of stuffing. I also enjoyed a small spoonful of cranberry sauce. Nothing to drink. I was full afterwards. I didn't make any dessert. I had some sf/ff pudding. About an hour after dinner, my family and I went on a walk around the neighborhood and then I went around again on my own. I was booking it! Felt very good.
Since it was just our little family today, we went to our zoo. What is usually a short 45 minute drive turned into a 2 hour drive. Not even 7 miles from home traffic was dead stopped. Two very nasty accidents. It took us almost an hour and a half to go 5 miles. But we did get there eventually and basically had the place to ourselves. I can't tell you how much easier it was to walk around the zoo from the last time I was there. No pain in my feet. I wasn't tired. I even raced my daughter up the ramp coming out of the sea lion exhibit. I cant remember the last rine I ran like that. 30 lbs off my body really has made a difference.
I am at a standstill with my weight right now. I got the Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred and did that yesterday. I am feeling it today. I am hoping that combined with the walking it will move things along and will help with toning.
I start post-op week 4 tomorrow and I will be sticking with eating my pureed foods instead of moving on to eating normal food. I see my doctor on Monday and we'll see what he says. I don't know if I will be getting my first fill then, so we'll see.

The Clothes Speak for Themselves
Went to church today. Hadn't been in a couple weeks because of my recovery. I put on a favorite skirt of mine and it barely stayed up. Success! I also wore one of my favorite sweaters that I had been too tight before. It looked good on me today. I am liking the way my body is looking as I drop this weight.
I have more energy. My feet don't hurt hardly at all anymore. I have to really start exercising this week. Kids are on Thanksgiving break so getting out on a good walk might be difficult. I could get them all on their bikes and try that. I need to find something to start toning. I would love to joing a gym but that's not really feasible right now.
I made avocado hummus tonight for dinner. Delicious! Very simple recipe: 2 avocados, 1 can white beans (drained and rinsed), 1Tb. plus 1 tsp olive oil, 1/2 tsp. Kosher sea salt, juice of 1 lime or lemon, and I added a few splashes of Cholula Hot Sauce cause I like a kick to it. Just put everything in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Post-op Day 11
I found a really neat route tracker where I can log my workouts and even make walking maps of my neighborhood. I made three routes: the one I did today; a 1 mile route; and a 1.5 mile route. This will be very helpful.

Pre-op Day 3
Pre-op Day 2
Worst day ever! Woke up with a severe migraine and nausea. I suffer with migraines. Wonder if its the sweetener in the shakes. I threw up all day. I got my shakes down but threw them back up. I. I only got 3 shakes down instead of 4. I cheated and had about 10 Ritz crackers. I was so hungry and my stomach was so upset. I just couldn't take it anymore! I needed something salty and something to settle my stomach.
Breakfast: orange Fanta Zero with vanilla shake.
Lunch: chocolate with water
Dinner: chocolate with water and a bit of ice.
Inbetween: beef broth, lime Jello, Popsicles.
Also had doses of Tylenol with codeine. Felt a bit better by evening and kept my last shake down and also beef broth and Popsicles. Kept everything down.
Props to my hubby for holding down the fort.
Pre-op Day 1
To prepare for my surgery my doctor has required that I do a 2 week liquid fast. I had been dreading this for weeks. I am doing the Optifast powder shakes. 4 shakes a day. I was given vanilla and chocolate. I can also have as much sugar free Jello, clear broth, sugar free popsicles as i want inbetween my shakes. I can mix my shakes with any clear, zero calorie and sugar free liquid that i want, including diet soda.
I started day one on Friday, October 25. I was a little late picking up my shakes from my doctor so I didn't have my first one until about 9:30. I had my first shake orange Powerade Zero with the vanilla powder. Yuck! Not a great way to start. But I got it down. The day went great. I had chicken broth, Jello, beef broth (my favorite), Popsicles, and my shakes. Lunch was chocolate with water. My third was vanilla with orange Fanta Zero and ice. Tasted like a creamsicle (mostly). Dinner was chocolate with water. I wasn't too hungry. It was a great day.
Helpful Tip: thank goodness for my Blendtec blender. It makes mixing these things a breeze.
A Change in the Making
I got out of college. I went through a period of depression. Of course I medicated myself with food. Then one day I had enough. I started eating healthy and exercising. By this time I had my first teaching job and was motivated to keep my weight down. I joined Weight Watchers and exercised religiously. I was succesful and list more than 50 pounds on WW. A short time later I met my husband and. gained a little. I was married. I got comfortable.
Six months later I got pregnant with my first child. I gained more. I only lost what I gained in baby weight. We moved. I suffered a devastating miscarriage. I medicated with food. A few months later I got pregnant again. We had a beautiful baby girl. I never lost the weight. When my son, our first child, was in second grade he was diagnosed with Aspergers Disorder. Guess how I coped? Yup, with food.
He's 2 now and the weight plus more is still here and I am at my heaviest. I have pain in my feet. I am tired all day. My migraines are out of control. I can't keep up with my kids.
